Working at Animal Exchange

For the last 34 years we have held classes for  individuals 14 or older who are interested in learning more about pets and/or working for Animal Exchange Those who have been hired are an amazing group that now include at least 9 Veterinarians, multiple scientific researchers, nurses, teachers and PhDs. However we’ve changed the format a bit as the world has changed and now ask anyone who is interested  to view the 16 or more videos on the Animal Exchange youtube channel. When you are confident with the information presented there, we will have you take a quiz on each one and add you to the list of potential employees. We can’t hire everyone but if you have spoken with our staff, you know they are the brightest and the best.

Our 3rd Tuesday Science Cafes have been a huge success ever since we started them 4+ years ago. Now there is a second opportunity at the Universities at Shady Grove. Their first one was April 17 and what a joy it was to be in a room packed with the next generation of  brilliant, inquisitive minds that will be solving many of the diseases and biological challenges we face today. There are fliers are on the front counter at Animal Exchange and we hope they will continue to provide many more stimulating events. May 1, 2013 is the next Cafe.

Bird Breeding and Parrot Psychology Classes

February 10, the Sunday closest to Valentines Day will be the date for our Bird Breeding class. Valentines Day is the day you traditionally put your canaries up to breed so that has always been when we do our overview class to encourage everyone to breed birds for us. It is fun, profitable and environmentally necessary.                                                                                                 In many cases, the behavior changes in pet birds at this time of year, relate to the increasing day length and hormone production. That’s why the Parrot Psychology class is scheduled for Sunday, February 17. Our 2 hour discussion will focus on how our birds perceive their world and what we can do to live successfully with them. They do live amazingly long lives with even little parakeets going as long as 21 years.

Please call the store to reserve your seat. Classes are $15 in advance, $25 at the door. They are held   3-5 PM on Sunday.

There is so much going on this month that I could not list everything in one short post.

Brother Roger Nelson, Cantor Cantor Marge Auerbach and Rev. Cindy Simpson will be here Friday, May 25 at 4:30 for our 23rd Blessing of the Animals and you are invited to come with pets or pictures for this memorable event. We have had everything from goldfish thru horses attend and of course lots of birds, bunnies, reptiles, dogs and cats.

Most birds have new feathers from their prenuptial molt. If they are out of the cage, please trim the wing feathers. Our youtube video shows how or make a appointment for Ruth to trim at the store.

We train pet people who are interested in working at the store. The classes will begin June 3. There is a schedule on our last newsletter or pick up a copy at the store.

Birds have bred well this spring so we have lots of baby parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels and even cut throat finches, all locally raised and beautiful. And yes we are handfeeding 2 more baby kakarikis from the box behind the cash register.
